This should be doable. There are iOS apps like DisplayLink that allows you to use the iPad as a monitor to your Windows PC, and it does it over WiFi. It's a bit of a novelty thing because of the size difference, but it works surprisingly well.

It basically requires some software on the PC that acts as a virtual video card and is able to send video to an app on the tablet.

I'd like to know if I sit a Win8 tablet next to a PC running Win8, can the Win8 PC extend the desktop to the tablet?

Also, using a Win8 phone near a PC, could you enhance application or game by displaying function icons on it?

I know these are features that either manufacturers or developers would have to build into their products but I'm curioius to know if the OS will have this kind of interconnectivity without a 3rd party solution as it would surely make the prospect of developing such enhancements easier and therefore more appealing.

It's not a pretty neat offer. There's always an upgrade window. If you buy a product and a brand new version is released shortly after, you get the upgrade for free. It's a standard practice. Without it, I might as well wait for the next version to be released

I think that more people will be interested in a windows 8 tablet rather than a windows RT tablet as I believe that most want the same capability as a regular PC with all of their usual software but just packaged in a smaller footprint The RT option seems to reveal the novelty factor of the IPad, it seems more like a big smartphone than a small PC which I think will be the biggest interest to those in the business world. Right now, everyone is trying to make the IPad a do it all but the intrinsic software limitations of its OS makes it just like the Mac of the 80s, excellent in its niche but not useful for the mainstream business world of existing PC software programs. Once intel figures out how to match the footprint of an IPad, I think that RT will be relagated to its special function niche instead of a real do it all PC.

I'm pretty sure it's not the same engine since IE10 has a new engine (and that should be the same one used in the web view control)

The release cycle for IE has changed

The option to automatically update is there now, but off by default because Microsoft thinks you should be in control and not Google

If Microsoft is smart, major IE updates will be released thru the store update mechanism, making it more visible to users than windows update (which lots of people just ignore)

The IE6 story is no longer relevant. What happened with IE6 is that Microsoft went to sleep thinking they killed Netscape and there's no reason to put a lot of effort into IE. They moved resources to other things. They admitted it was a mistake and said it won't happen again...

The Apple argument is enough here. Windows RT or windows on arm, will only run on tablets where Microsoft doesn't have any market share right now and Apple is king.

Microsoft, in their market position, can do whatever they want for win rt. and on the x86 version these other browsers work, so they don't really have a case.

No it wouldn't. Unlike Apple there is no restriction against executing Javascript.

There is an issue where it is not clear how many JIT optimizations are possible (WinRT API) but this will make the browser slower, not prevent it.
